As a professional organizer, there is almost nothing I like more than helping people build healthy habits and make sense out of chaos. Piles of paper, cluttered cabinets and counters, and stuffed spaces are more than an eyesore. They create stress, fatigue, and unhappiness.
Organization is the antidote.
When your home and systems are in order, your brain relaxes. You feel calmer, lighter, and more focused. Organization doesn’t just clear your space. It clears your mind and adds (and dare I say joy) to your day. .
Here’s the good news: organization isn’t something you are either born with or without.
Organization is learned.
And anyone can learn it by creating simple habits that support their lifestyle.
Three habits to help you be more organized.
1. Everything has a home.
Remembering this tenant and using it daily will keep you organized. When things come in, put them in a home — a desk, a drawer, a cabinet — the trash. You can find things easily when they are in a home that makes sense. Otherwise, things pile up, chaos follows.
2. Tidy up daily.
Life is fluid, things move and lost their place. Take 5-10 minutes a day, before the day ends to reset. You’ll end the night with calm and begin the next day on the same note.
3. Make your bed.
Starting the day with order sets the tone. A made bed is the first completed task of the day – one that sparks a ripple effect of accomplishment and calm. {In this inspiring commencement video, former Navy Seal Admiral William McRaven even says making your bed can change the world. Amen, Admiral!}
Getting organized takes time, patience, and sometimes a little help. But once you set up systems thoroughly, staying organized becomes natural. And these habits – simple but powerful – are the kind you’ll never want to break.
