{Inside: Five ways to declutter mentally and create space to live with less chaos.}
Time is fleeting. You have likely heard this through your life and perhaps subconsciously ingested it as truth. The busier your life gets, the easier it is to chalk it all up to time being fleeting. Or to the fact that there just isn’t enough of.
Time certainly is limited. And at some point, your time, and mine, will come to an end. That alone should move you to treat it as sacred. In fact, because time is limited it deserves to be valued and cared for as you would any irreplaceable resource.
One way you might poorly use your time relates to how you treat your schedule.
There are ways to declutter mentally and shift your perception about time so treat it with more respect. And in doing so create more mental (and physical) space void of chaos.
Five ways to declutter mentally and create space
1. Declutter your brain.
Start by getting everything out of your head and onto paper (on into an app). This “brain dump” clears the clutter of small tasks, reminders, and projects that weigh on your mind. When it’s written down, you don’t have to remember it all. You can trust it’s captured and come back to it later. To declutter mentally start with this simple act of freeing your brain for focus and calm.
2. Organize your time
A list isn’t enough. You need to decide when things will get done. By writing tasks into your calendar or planner (I quite like this one), you take control of your time and stop tasks from swirling around in your head. Scheduling is what turns “I’ll get to it someday” into “this will get done today”. Organized time equals less overwhelm and more progress.
3. Change your mindset.
Your thoughts shape your reality. If you constantly say “I don’t have time” or “I’m too busy,” you reinforce stress. A simple shift in language can open space mentally. Try affirmations like “I have time what I need to do”, or “I choose peace with my calendar.” Changing your mindset is how you declutter mentally at the deepest level and clear away the negative narrative.
4. Choose wisely.
Your calendar is a reflection of your priorities. Beyond the non-negotiables, what you say yes to should align with your values and goals. Every commitment is a choice; so choose wisely. When your schedule is filled with what matters, it becomes easier to stay focused, balanced, and on track.
5. Assess often
Mental decluttering is not a one-time task. It’s a muscle you exercise. Regularly assess your commitments, boundaries, and progress. This awareness helps you spot where you’ve over committed, make adjustments, and reset your focus. Assessment ensures the other steps stick, creating lasting space for clarity and calm.
________
Time will always feel fleeting if you don’t take the reins of how you spend it. When you declutter mentally you create space for what really matters.
The truth is, you’ll never “find” more time. But you can create a feeling of abundance with it by choosing with care what fills it. When you do, life feels calmer, clearer, and infinitely more meaningful.
