September is the new January. It has always felt like a time of renewal and change to me — a time to get back on track, settle into routines, and find some predictability in the day again.
Every season brings change, but September feels different. Summer winds down, schedules become more structured, and there is a natural pull toward getting things done.
Whether or not you have children heading back to school, we’re entering a time of transition.
And I think that feeling of being ready for change is something worth embracing.
Not unlike January, September can feel like an opportunity to turn over a new leaf. But while New Year’s resolutions can sometimes feel fleeting, September’s structure can give us something to work with.
After the more relaxed, unpredictable rhythms of summer, there can be something surprisingly satisfying about getting tidy again — the schedule, the house, the routines.
I look forward to it every year.
It feels a little like life is starting all over again.
We shift priorities from summer camp and pool parties to homework and meal planning. From spontaneous evenings to more predictable mornings. And with that shift, we usher in a new season of life.
A new season can offer a fresh perspective. A different way to let go. An opportunity to embrace something new.
And September is a particularly good time to ask yourself:
What do I want to change?
Maybe you want to get back to a workout routine that got lost in the hustle of summer. Maybe you want to try yoga, Pilates, or train for a half marathon.
Or you want to learn a language, declutter your home, work on your marriage, make more time for yourself, or reconnect with friends.
Pick a goal. Maybe two.
Then ask yourself:
What do I need to do to make this happen?
Write down the steps. Then start taking them — one at a time — until you reach your goal or decide it’s time to reset.
You don’t have to wait for January to begin again.
Let September be your January.
And let this beautiful season of change give you a reason to start fresh.
What would you like to try, accomplish, or change as September begins? What one or two things will you focus on?
