The top 4 reasons letter writing rocks: add this to your list

It wasn’t my intention when I made a vow of sorts to write more letters that I’d get letters in return. I intended to try my hand at doing something that has become a lost art of which I refused to let go. And I had a feeling there would be added benefits of taking on letter writing as a task:

  • being forced to slow down – even just stop
  • the more thought-filled connection it would produce
  • the feeling of joy delivered to the recipient

The benefits have exceeded my expectations.

And all of those things, and then some, have happened and I have to tell you, it feels good.  It has become a little more of a habit actually – which was my hope – because I started to put it on my To Do list.  Not so much as a dreaded task but rather a place for me to jot down on paper the names of people who often randomly come to mind who I think would quite enjoy a letter.

What has happened is – well, the best-case scenario.  People are responding.  And their responses are so joy-filled and happy!

Letter writing rocks.  Here are 4 of the top reasons why I think so.

1. It spreads happiness.

No one gets mail these days that isn’t a bill. A letter is a little happiness in your mailbox that brings joy. And whether you are giving or receiving the letter you are part of that happy.

2. It releases stress.

We are always rushing from one thing to the next. A letter you write forces you to slow down. And it takes your mind off of the many things that distract you from what matters – which I would go so far as to say helps to reduce your stress.

3. It builds esteem.

The sense of satisfaction from letter writing feels amazing.  These days, unfortunately, it is a feat to sit and spend time writing a letter. That sense of accomplishment and feeling of having done good goes a long way to boosting esteem.

4. It transmits love.

Thi is perhaps the best reason to write a letter. I can think of a lot of ways to show love and be loving and this is up there. You transmit love because anytime you help someone feel joy, that my friend, is love.

So get out your paper and pen, sit for 10 minutes, and write. Feel the good you are doing for yourself, and for all the joy and love you are spreading to others.

“Love is misunderstood to be an emotion; actually, it is a state of awareness, a way of being in the world, a way of seeing oneself and others.” – David R. Hawkins
