I recently read a post about resolutions from one of my favorite bloggers, Glennon from Momastery. She is so raw and honest and reading whatever she writes about motherhood and life really resonates with me.
This particular post was around the New Year and wasn’t a typical post about making resolutions and changing and doing and being better. Which made me say out loud to my computer, “Yeeesss!” in agreement. Finally a way to resolve that resonates. Something that speaks more to being who you now are instead of always trying to be more, or better.
Glennon writes:
I don’t want a new, better life in 2016. I just want new eyes to see that my life is already staggeringly beautiful.
I don’t want to be a better mom in 2016. I just want new eyes to see that the miracle is not good better best — the miracle is that these people are mine and I am theirs. Full stop.
And I don’t want to be a BETTER ME in 2016. Screw that. I don’t want to chase after some imaginary more fabulous version of myself. I AM what the people I love need. I already AM. And when we are always BECOMING we have no room to BE. So I’m done striving. I’m fine, thanks. I’m showing up to love my people and you and the world this year JUST AS I AM.”
I couldn’t have said it better. In fact, I’ve printed it up so I can remember to be where I am. Just as I am. That if I show up to love, well, then I’m doing just fine. I realized after reading her post that I am quite tired of trying to constantly become instead of being proud that where I am is more than good and what matters. The traditional resolution tends to send a message to my self that says, “You aren’t really good enough…yet. Keep resolving to be better and then you’ll be worthy”. I am thinking it might not be what is best for me. Perhaps, not for anyone.
I am all for goal setting and accomplishing things that make your life feel more like you want it to. That is important. And so is appreciating – owning! – who you are. Having pride in where you are and resolving to show up to love…the world this year just as I am.
It’s the best resolution I’ve ever made.

Excellent resolution. What you are is “more than good”
